ROCKVILLE, Maryland, April 15, 2009 - 2000 Tower Oaks Boulevard (TowerOaks.com), a co-development of The Tower Companies and Lerner Enterprises, located along the I-270 Technology Corridor in Rockville, MD, has been named winner of the 2009 Peerless Rockville Preservation Award for “Green” Design and Construction. On May 9th, Rockville Mayor Susan R. Hoffman will tour the building with 50 Peerless Rockville members from 9:30 until 12:30 p.m. The award ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 11 at
7:30 p.m. in the Grand Courtroom of the Red Brick Courthouse in Rockville.
2000 Tower Oaks Boulevard, the 200,000 square foot, nine-story, building of the future, combines the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) “Designed to Meet LEED Platinum” criteria with the world’s largest application of Fortune-Creating(sm) architecture and making it the healthiest building ever built. The building has already achieved Platinum point status but the developers are still waiting for USGBC ruling on clarification of a few additional points.
Kishimoto, Gordon, Dalaya, PC (KGD) (KGDArchitecture.com), designed the structure in consultation with architect Jon Lipman with Fortune-Creating(sm) Buildings, which is built on the Vedic principals of orientation, placement and proportion, that determines how the building relates to the body, mind and the environment to improve the occupant’s health, enhance job performance and success.
The building’s green efficiencies are “Designed to Earn ENERGY STAR” and reduce energy consumption by 28%, water consumption by 41%; the HVAC system is 39% more efficient than for typical offices; a four-stage air filtration system circulates 25% more outside air than required by code, turns over every 51 minutes, controls odors and removes over 90% of airborne contaminants before it reaches tenants. Furthermore, 90% of occupants have outside views, 74% have natural daylight, CO2 monitoring increases fresh air when necessary and there is “night sky” protection; no light pollution leaves the site; electromagnetic field (EMF) shielding. Eighty percent (80%) of all electric equipment is Energy Star-rated, 22% of the materials were manufactured within a 500-mile radius; 85% of the construction waste was recycled. Over 17,000 drought resistant plantings of trees, ornamental grasses and bulbs compliment the buildings’ landscape in the park-like setting.
The exquisite office building features a 30-foot lit onyx wall in the lobby, luxurious restrooms, 2,500 square foot fitness facility, including lockers, showers and Pilates exercise room, and an on-site café which sells organic and healthy fare.
Over 800 people—including public officials, business/civic organizations, schools and media—have toured 2000 Tower Oaks Boulevard because it is the first building to go beyond green to increase workforce success and business growth.
